Down the Hill True Crime Documentary Review, The Delphi Bridge Murders

What Down the Hill is all about without spoiling the show

Down the Hill is the story of what became known as the Delphi Bridge Murders. By the time I watched it, the story was very outdated because it was a newer case and there was a lot of mystery at the time when Down the Hill was made. A ton has happened since this was released so I can’t really spoil much because at the time there was a lot more developing.

Down the Hill covers the horrific crime that happened to two young girls, Abigail Williams and Liberty German, one day while exploring a bridge that passes through the woods. Because the case has been updated a lot since this film was produced, you will not get the full picture from any premise I can put together without spoiling everything.

Did you know anything about the Down the Hill story before watching?

I was very familiar with this story before watching it and had hoped it was more recent than it was. A lot is left out because of when it was produced. We didn’t even get to see the suspected owner of the property on camera, however, they did mention him but not by name.

Will Down the Hill make people feel uncomfortable?

There is an incredibly eerie feeling around this story which is one of the reasons why it is so well-known. The documentary doesn’t explain much of the violence either because they were keeping it tight to the vest or didn’t yet know all of the details. Even missing the gore, it’s uncomfortable. There is allusion to sexual and violent crimes that take place against two young girls. It’s a sick story that the documentary doesn’t get detailed about.

A major part of the case is we think we actually see the killer on a camera phone and hear his voice say those infamous words, “Down the hill.” This makes the story so much more chilling.

What was good about Down the Hill?

Down the Hill does a good job of telling the basics of the story. Again, because so much has changed in the years since, a lot is incredibly outdated. That’s the major fault of Down the Hill. There was progress and not much known at the time this was produced. It was likely to serve as an immediate way to get the message out to the public.

The pacing of Down the Hill works and we get a lot of setup prior to the crime and the aftermath. Given the amount of information known at the time, I think they did a good job covering it.

What could have made Down the Hill better?

There is going to be a much better documentary of this case in the future. It’s such a high-profile story that when it is proven who committed the crime, a filmmaker will be able to profile the murderer more. An arrest has already been made as of late 2022.

If future filmmakers were to do something similar to what was done in The Anthrax Attacks with a deeper look at the killer’s personal life, a very good take on this story could be made.

Is Down the Hill worth watching?

There is only a certain type of true crime fan who might enjoy watching Down the Hill. It was well-made but suffers from how outdated it became so quickly. That’s always the trouble with unsolved crimes; once solved or something changes, your whole film becomes extinct. The good news is that justice may be served.

Down the Hill probably isn’t worth watching if you’re already familiar with the case of the Delphi Bridge Murders unless you want to digest every version of this case. It is worth your time. Just don’t expect to come away learning anything new.

Overall Score: 6 out of 10

The same filmmakers who did the 2020 version of this should come back and get a shot at doing a third and maybe even fourth part. They deserve it. This can complete the story they began to told.
